I'm sure by now you have heard that journaling is one of those habits that all the cool kids are doing (and by "cool kids", I mean the super successful individuals that most of us aspire to be).

But, what you may not know, is the behind the scenes magic that makes journaling SO beneficial.

Journaling helps you gain clarity and clears space for your memory to process new thoughts and ideas.

If you think of your brain like a computer - the more clutter you have floating around, the slower it will be able to process, sort, and create new files.

Any new habit will have a butterfly effect on other areas of your life (for example, people who regularly work out tend to also make better decisions when it comes to eating, sleeping, screen time, etc).

LIKE A MUSCLE, THE MORE FREQUENTLY YOU EXERCISE A HABIT, THE STRONGER IT BECOMES.

Need proof? Charles Duhigg wrote two books explaining the ripple effect one habit can have on your life. Duhigg coined this phenomena "keystone habits".

HOW TO CREATE A DAILY JOURNALING HABIT TO BOOST YOUR PRODUCTIVITY

DON'T JUDGE YOURSELF

The goal isn't to write your memoir (most days my journaling consists of two to three words per prompt), or even to have something to review in the future. Get any and all ideas out of your head to clear up space. Committing to this over time will allow you to process and solidify goals you are working towards.

TACK IT ONTO AN EXISTING DAILY HABIT

Research has shown that one of the best ways to cultivate a new habit is by anchoring it to something basic you already do (such as brushing your teeth, walking the dog, or making a cup of coffee). I personally sit down to journal directly after making my bed every morning.

TRACK IT SOMEWHERE

Just like getting a gold star for doing something right in elementary school, having a visible way to track and admire your progress will help keep you accountable to your new habit. You can do it right in your regular calendar by making a symbol for the days you meet your journaling goal, or you can download a customizable habit tracker to print out.

BLOCK DISTRACTIONS

Put your devices on "do not disturb" mode and sit down to the task at hand. It will take 10  minutes of your day and result in a lifetime of getting what you work towards.
